By Maria J. Songer | June 10, 2011

There are many people who have questions about the Red Ring of Death warranty and how it is applied. One has to keep in mind however, that this warranty pertains to the original Xbox 360 not the newer models. For the older models, the time frame is three years from the date of purchase. Before sending the Xbox back, it is a good idea to make sure that they there is a problem.

The Red Ring of Death warranty is in effect three years from the date of purchase. One has to be sure not to void the warranty by opening up the console to fix it themselves. Some people do this because they do not want to take the time to wait for another Xbox which is usually three weeks. So they decide to take matters into their own hands.

Some may still want to do this anyway, so they might refer to websites and books that provide ways to fix the problem. Some people are already used to doing this type of work and they may not have an issue with this. On the other hand, many would rather have the manufacturer solve the issue as it is the manufacturer who created the product in the first place.

Sometimes a person may see four red lights flashing and think that this refers to the Red Ring of Death. This is actually a different problem and usually means the video and audio cables were not plugged in correctly. It can be a waste of time to send in the console only to find that there was no real problem in the first place. This is why it is important to do some troubleshooting first.

Problems can occur if there is an issue with the power outlet in a particular room. This can be solved by using the console in another room. But, sometimes the issue might be the power supply. To tell the difference, one has to check the power supply light that is on the rectangular box. It may be green, red or unlit.

If the power supply light is green, this can mean a problem with the power outlet. If there is overheating, then the color of the light would be red. The best way to deal with this problem, is to cool the Xbox. This is done by turning everything off and letting the Xbox cool in a place where there is lots of cool air.

An unlit power supply light can mean that the cables need to be plugged in securely. On the other hand, the cables themselves might be the issue. If plugging the cables in properly does not help, then the cables need to be replaced. One can contact the manufacturer to let them know what the problem is and what action needs to be taken.

There are ways to prevent the problem if one is mindful of the situation. They can make sure that they use the console in a well ventilated area. This will help to keep the Xbox from overheating. One should also make an effort not to overuse the Xbox, as using it for extended periods of time can cause overheating. One should also try not to use it too much when it is very hot or in high temperatures.

The Red Ring of Death warranty is a serious sounding title for xBox performance problem repairs. You might want to invoke the Red Ring of Death warranty instead of attempting repair of the unit yourself.
